Planning Senior Portraits in Austin: Complete Guide
Senior year comes with a long checklist. Portraits are usually somewhere in the middle of it. important enough to book, easy enough to push off.
Here's the honest truth: senior portraits are one of the few times in your life that someone photographs you on purpose. Not at a party. Not mid-laugh at someone's phone. You, intentionally, in images that are meant to last.
Worth doing right.
When to Book
The earlier, the better. but not because we're trying to pressure you. It's because the sessions you actually want fill up.
Most Austin seniors book between January and May of junior year, or over the summer before senior year begins. Fall sessions in particular. golden hour, cooler temperatures, beautiful light. fill by June for September and October dates.
If you're reading this in the fall of your senior year: still worth calling. Cancelations happen, and winter and spring sessions are often beautiful in Austin.
Book 3 to 6 months before you want to shoot. That gives you time to plan, shop for outfits, and show up with intention rather than scrambling.
Choosing Your Location
Location sets the tone for everything. A few options that work beautifully in Austin:
Vue Studio. Samantha's private portrait studio at 2302 Jacks Pass. Fully controlled lighting, multiple sets, no weather variables. Great for editorial looks, dramatic light, and images that feel more magazine than yearbook.
Outdoor Austin locations. Barton Creek Greenbelt, South Congress, Bull Creek, Steiner Ranch open spaces. Natural light, texture, a sense of place. Works especially well for athletic, artistic, or outdoorsy personalities.
A meaningful location. A park you grew up near. Your high school's campus. A place that actually means something. Some of the best senior sessions are rooted in somewhere specific.
Location is discussed during your consultation. Samantha will ask questions and help you land on something that actually fits you.
Outfits. The Part Most Seniors Stress About Most
The goal isn't "what looks nice." The goal is "what looks like me."
The three-to-five outfit framework:
- One dressy/formal look. whatever that means to you. Could be a gown. Could be a blazer. Could be something you'd wear to something that matters.
- One casual or relaxed look. something you'd actually wear. A favorite outfit, a great pair of jeans, a vintage find.
- One or two wild cards. athletic gear if sports are a big part of your identity, a costume if you're a theater kid, a band tee if that's your thing.
What to avoid:
- Bright logos and graphic tees (they date quickly and pull focus)
- Anything that's uncomfortable. you'll look uncomfortable
- Too many patterns at once
- Trendy pieces you'll cringe at in five years
Hair and makeup are included. a professional artist handles everything before the session. So arrive relaxed. You don't need to have your hair done before you get there.
What to Expect the Day Of
You'll arrive to hair and makeup. Plan about an hour for that. it's part of the experience, not a separate thing you have to figure out.
Once styling is done, Samantha takes over. She'll tell you where to stand, how to angle, when to look away, when to look right at the lens. You don't need to know how to pose. That's her job.
Sessions typically run 2 to 3 hours, including all outfit changes. There's no rushing. The goal is to get through all your looks with time for real moments. not just posed ones. in each.
Parents are welcome to attend. Samantha will set aside time for a few frames together, which consistently become some of the most treasured images from the session.
The Images That Last
Here's what makes senior portraits worth doing well: these images stick around.
They go on walls. They end up in frames on grandparents' mantelpieces. They get pulled out at graduation parties, at college move-in, at weddings someday.
They're a record of who you were at this exact moment. before the next chapter starts.
Get them done thoughtfully. With someone who's done this hundreds of times and knows how to make you look like the best version of yourself rather than a version of everyone else.
